How poor are they who have not patience. Shakespeare
Everyday I learn how to be patient. This is not my strong side but in the fast changing world of communications we need ironically lots of patience.
- We need patience to explain our grandparents (and some clients) what PR is.
- We need patience to build strong and effective brands.
- We need patience to communicate with directors, clients, partners, journalists, target groups. We need even more patience to convince them in our ideas.
- We need patience to read a lot and to stay informed.
- We need patience to win intelligently in arguments.
- We need patience to keep calm when we hear: “How long will it take to polish our image?”.
- We need patience to transform boring news, people, products, press releases…
- We need patience to maintain good relations with different stakeholders. And to understand what people (and women) actually want and need.
- We need patience to discover new horizons because some of us should be early adopters, trend setters and opinion leaders.
- We need patience to feed our curiosity.
I am sure this list isn’t short. But it definitely verifies the importance of being patient. So if you are just like me and can’t wait:
- for next morning news;
- for the next day big presentation;
- for the important meeting with a new client;
- for the media coverage of the special event you have organized;
- for the preparation of PR strategy plan 2011;
use your energy and time to create, to interact and to prepare for the next big steps.
We really need patience. As the Tanzanian marathoner Juma Ikaanga says: “The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare“.
Let your impatience help you to prepare.

Patience is forged and tested every day, in every occasion. I don’t believe it’s strictly a PR quality, it’s more a “smart people” quality. Something you need in order to survive, otherwise you’ll be a mindless raging individual. A smart person knows he has to be patient when dealing with an average person ;)

Gabriele, yes, it is a “smart people” virtue but I wanted to define patience from the point of view of a PR person :)

Yeah sorry I just took it from a wider perspective :D
This is great! It’s so very true, so relevant and it pretty much describes what us PR people have to do! I wish all clients out there could understand this and take this on board. Patience also helps to cultivate long term relationships with journalists and that ultimately helps with securing coverage for clients in the future.
This is a fantastic post on patience. It can be applied to not only PR but in any career. We must step back, live in the moment, and remember not to rush things. Patience does not come easily and it is a learned skill for most. As a communications professional, I know I am still learning the power of patience!
